Dr. Mário Tyago Murakami

Researcher in biotechnology, with expertise in biocatalysis, synthetic biology, and bioenergy. His work focuses on exploring the microbial dark matter of Brazilian biodiversity and developing microbial biofactories for the production of enzymes and innovative bioproducts. He leads interdisciplinary institutional programs and large-scale R&D projects in partnership with biotech companies. His research has led to groundbreaking advances published in journals such as Nature, Nature Chemical Biology, and Nature Communications.

At the Brazilian Center for Research in Energy and Materials (CNPEM) since 2008, he has overseen major scientific facilities and held leadership roles, including Scientific Director (2018–2025) and currently Executive Director of the Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR). He also serves on Brazil’s National Biosafety Technical Commission (CTNBio), acting as vice-president (since Sep/2024) and coordinator of the animal subcommittee (since Feb/2025). He is an affiliated member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and recipient of the EMBRAPII Outstanding Researcher Award.
